The Gleaning is going on Tour
We created The Gleaning for Somerset Art Weeks in 2023 as a collaborative project involving hundreds of people in Shepton Mallet over several months. The 11 textile and paper panels depict stories in ‘stained glass’ gathered from the community across a range of themes.
We are now very excited to take The Gleaning on Tour to Holy Island in Northumbria, linking the work produced in the South West with the North East. While we are there, we will facilitate the creation of a new panel that will remain in situ. In September 2026, The Gleaning will respond to Somerset Art Weeks (SAW’s) 2026 theme of ‘Cultural Connections’ by connecting the south-west of England with the north-east, re-staging the exhibition at the Holy Island Arts Festival in Northumberland.
10 of the original 11 panels will be suspended in front of the windows of St Cuthbert’s Centre on Lindisfarne, but the 11th panel, Shepton Mallet: the place, will be replaced by a dedicated Holy Island panel created collaboratively by participants and visitors to the Re-Breathe Festival. This will be left at the end of the project as an enduring cultural connection between the artists of Somerset and the artists of Northumberland.
